It was a nice day out, and Laredo wanted to go somewhere and just play. He was tired of dealing with the others in the city making fun of him. Especailly the Normals. Whoever it was who said that children were some of the most savage beasts was absolutely correct. Not that Laredo minded too much, for he often forgot a slight almost as soon as it was given. He did understand, however, that some of the other children, the older ones, especially, thought he was beneath them. Sure, shifting into animal form and scaring them would work. It would work just fine! But Laredo well knew that to do that was to alert the scientists where he was, who his friends were, and what they were doing. That could never happen. So, Laredo came to Crater Lake to play by himself. In animal form, too.
Making sure no one was watching, Laredo slipped out of his shirt and shorts, hiding them beneath a bush. Through trial and error, he had learned that they did not survive the shift from boy to horse, or boy to bear. Boy to bird, however, that was a different story. But today, Laredo wanted to be a bear. He wanted to play in the water, and scoop fish out with his bare (or bear!) paws. Once the shift was complete, Laredo stood up on his hind legs and roared to the surrounding area that he was there before plunging into the water.
If he really wanted fish, that was absolutely the worst way to go about doing things. Because every idiot knew, and Laredo was much like every idiot, that noise scared fish away. Right now, though, Laredo wanted to splash and play. Forget about getting something to eat! Now was the time to enjoy the true beauty of the water and the quiet of the surrounding area. Submerging himself in the lake, the blue eyed bear rolled and splashed, making a complete mess of his fur. Even that did not bother him, or seem to. After awhile, he grew tired of his games and wandered out of the water and onto the shore. Finding a suitable spot, he turned around several times and lay down, the sun beating down on him, helping to dry his fur.
"Ah, this is fun, isn't it, Laredo? No one telling you what to do, nowhere to be at a certain time, no one making fun of you. I can live like this." Laredo mused to himself, the sound coming from his bear chest sounding like so many growls and grunts.
